Shopping

Shanghai Garden's orientation package includes a comprehensive tour of the city's most prominent shopping districts and markets, as well as advice regarding local customs and bargaining.

Shanghai is developing its own unique style that will very soon compete with the ultimate shopping experience anywhere in the world. Right now there are already some wonderful high end boutiques, as well as large scale designer shopping. Some notables, including Cartier, Marc Jacobs, Gucci, and Prada, will keep even the most fashioned shoppers happy. For those with a more limited budget, there are plenty of special areas that are fun to wander about and gather less expensive, yet equally interesting items.
The two most well-known shopping streets are Nanjing Road and Huaihai Road. Nanjing Road is a must-see metropolitan destination attracting thousands of fashion-seeking shoppers from all over the world. The eastern part of Nanjing Road is a pedestrian street, and one of the main tourist destinations in Shanghai. Over 600 businesses on Nanjing road offer countless famous brands, superior quality, and new fashions from around the globe. In addition, approximately a hundred traditional stores and specialty shops still provide choice silk goods, jade, embroidery, wool, and clocks. Huaihai Road, no less famous than Nanjing Road, is celebrated for its elegance and features top-end designer brands from all over the world.

Shanghai also has an array of markets, where expatriates and Chinese alike spend hours shopping and browsing. Some of these markets are known as "fake markets", selling knock-offs of designer brands. The quality of such items can be suprising at times, and with good bargaining skills, these luxury items can be had for a small fraction of the cost of the real thing.
