Car Rental

Bus
Buses in Shanghai are numerous and very inexpensive. However, they are often over-crowed and can be a bit difficult to navigate for non-Mandarin speakers. Expatriates often choose other modes of transportation.
Subway
Shanghai is very well-connected by subways. There are currently five subway lines, with three additional lines under construction. The subway is open from around 6 am to 10 pm and tickets are inexpensive. While trains arrive every few minutes on the main lines, the cars are almost always crowded. Many subway stations also have retail, electronics, and food vendors.
Taxi
Taxis are inexpensive, numerous, and convenient, making them the preferred mode of transport for many expatriates. They are all metered and start at 11 RMB (14 RMB after 11 pm). Hailing a taxi in bad weather can be difficult, but they can be arranged over the phone.
Bicycle/Scooter
Bicylces and scooters are the most common forms of transportation in Shanghai. Local bicyclists are numerous and a bit aggressive, making for an interesting biking experience for the newly-arrived expatriate.
Shanghai Public Transportation Card
The Shanghai Public Transportation card is a refillable card that can be used for all public transportation, including taxis, the subway, and buses. It can be purchased at subway stations, bus terminals, banks, and most convenience stores, and can be refilled at subway stations.
